For many folks, summer is officially over as kids and teachers head back to school. But in all reality, it's still hot out there and there are many ways to keep the restful spirit of summer simmering in our hearts. I, for one, have decided that we need to stop living for summers (with a husband who's a teacher, it's been really easy to do). I'm hoping we can take the time to be intentional even when things get busy and especially as we hustle toward Christmas. But that's for another blog. Let's get through August first.
There is only a little more than a week left before we say hello to September, and I'm already envisioning the smells and sounds of fall. But before I start thinking about leaf rubbings and pumpkin pie, there are a few things I want to hold onto for just a little bit longer; evening walks with the hubby and bike rides for the boys; occasional weekend day trips to museums, parks and maybe even the beach; BBQ get togethers with friends; camping with lots of cloud watching by day and star gazing at night... There's still so much summer to be had!
I may sound a little idealistic and impractical, but I can either sit here and lament the end of our "official" summer break or I can choose to keep celebrating even when our lives naturally start to transition elsewhere. And even when the seasons do start to change, I want to maintain the celebratory attitude that summer naturally brings. I'd rather have an enduring mindset rooted in joy year-long than cram "happy" into two months and suffer the grind the rest of the time. This is a self talk and I may be speaking to only myself here, but I'm betting there is at least one other person out there who's able to relate. To you, my friend, let's keep this restful mindset going and choose to sneak in play whenever we can. We can still get all our work done. I promise.
